About ICP-MS cones
What the cones do
The sampler and skimmer cones sit between the atmospheric-pressure plasma and the instrument vacuum. Their small orifices extract the ion beam, so their condition directly affects sensitivity and stability.
When to replace them
Watch for falling sensitivity, drifting signals, rising oxide ratios, or a worn, enlarged or deformed orifice. Keeping a spare set on hand avoids unplanned downtime.
Looking after your cones

Choose the right cone material
| Material | Best for |
| Nickel | Routine aqueous analysis. Lowest cost. |
| Aluminium | Lower-cost option that avoids nickel contamination when nickel is an analyte. |
| Copper | Excellent heat conduction; used as a base or core material for longer cone life. |
| Platinum | Aggressive acids and organic solvents. Longest life and lowest background. |
| Platinum with Ni or Cu base | Platinum performance on a durable base for better value. |
